Mumbai University CGPA / SGPI Formula
Per University of Mumbai CBCS regulations. SGPI and CGPA use the same weighted-average formula.
Note: At University of Mumbai, CGPI (Cumulative Grade Point Index) and CGPA are used interchangeably — they are mathematically identical. Likewise, SGPI = SGPA.
📝 Worked Example — CGPA
A University of Mumbai student has completed 6 semesters with the following performance:
| Semester | Credits | SGPI | Credit × SGPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester I | 19 | 7.5 | 19 × 7.5 = 142.5 |
| Semester II | 21 | 8.9 | 21 × 8.9 = 186.9 |
| Semester III | 18 | 7.6 | 18 × 7.6 = 136.8 |
| Semester IV | 21 | 7.4 | 21 × 7.4 = 155.4 |
| Semester V | 20 | 8.6 | 20 × 8.6 = 172.0 |
| Semester VI | 22 | 7.3 | 22 × 7.3 = 160.6 |
| Total | 121 | — | 954.2 |

Official University of Mumbai Grading Scales
The current CBCS scheme uses a 10-point scale; older programmes used a 7-point scale.
📘 Current CBCS 10-Point Scale
Used for current B.E./B.Tech, B.Sc.IT, BMS, BAF and most UG/PG programmes
| Marks Range | Letter Grade | Grade Point | Performance |
|---|---|---|---|
| ≥ 80% | O | 10 | Outstanding |
| 70 – 79.99% | A+ | 9 | Excellent |
| 60 – 69.99% | A | 8 | Very Good |
| 55 – 59.99% | B+ | 7 | Good |
| 50 – 54.99% | B | 6 | Above Average |
| 45 – 49.99% | C | 5 | Average |
| 40 – 44.99% | D | 4 | Pass |
| < 40% | F | 0 | Fail |
Note: Minimum grade to pass any course is D (grade point 4, marks ≥ 40%). A failed subject ("KT") keeps its credits in the denominator but contributes 0 grade points until cleared.
📘 Older 7-Point Scale (Legacy)
Used for some Arts/Science/Commerce programmes under the 2011 CBSGS scheme
| Marks in % | Letter Grade | Grade Point |
|---|---|---|
| 70 & Above | O (Outstanding) | 7 |
| 60 – 69.99 | A (Excellent) | 6 |
| 55 – 59.99 | B (Very Good) | 5 |
| 50 – 54.99 | C (Good) | 4 |
| 45 – 49.99 | D (Fair) | 3 |
| 40 – 44.99 | E (Satisfactory) | 2 |
| ≤ 39.99 | F (Fail) | 1 |
Note: This older 7-point scale was applicable to learners enrolled for the first year of UG programmes under Arts, Science & Commerce from academic year 2011-12 onwards (in a phased manner). Most current programmes have transitioned to the 10-point CBCS scale.
The Official Mumbai University Conversion Formula
📝 Examples
CGPA 8.5 → 7.1 × 8.5 + 11 = 71.35%
CGPA 7.0 → 7.1 × 7.0 + 11 = 60.70% (First Class threshold)
CGPA 10.0 → 7.1 × 10 + 11 = 82.00% (maximum)
Note: A perfect 10 CGPA equals 82% under this formula — this is the official conversion standard used for Mumbai University certificates and transcripts. Some engineering departments cite an alternative 7.25 × CGPA + 11 for CGPA < 7, but 7.1 is the widely-accepted standard.
Mumbai University CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions
How is University of Mumbai CGPA converted to percentage?
The official University of Mumbai formula is: Percentage = 7.1 × CGPA + 11.
Examples: CGPA 8.5 → 71.35% | CGPA 7.0 → 60.70% | CGPA 10.0 → 82.00%.
This formula applies to the current CBCS 10-point grading system across most UG and PG programmes. Note that a perfect 10 CGPA equals 82%, not 100% — this is the official conversion standard.
What is the University of Mumbai grading scale?
The current CBCS system uses a 10-point scale:
O = 10 (≥ 80%) · A+ = 9 (70-79.99%) · A = 8 (60-69.99%) · B+ = 7 (55-59.99%) · B = 6 (50-54.99%) · C = 5 (45-49.99%) · D = 4 (40-44.99%) · F = 0 (< 40%).
Older Arts/Science/Commerce programmes (2011 CBSGS scheme) used a 7-point scale (O=7, A=6, B=5, C=4, D=3, E=2, F=1). Use the scheme selector in the SGPI calculator to switch between them.
Is CGPI the same as CGPA at Mumbai University?
Yes. At University of Mumbai, CGPI (Cumulative Grade Point Index) and CGPA are used interchangeably and are mathematically identical — especially in engineering programmes.
Similarly, SGPI (Semester Grade Point Index) is the same as SGPA. The math, weightage, and value are absolutely identical. If your marksheet says "CGPI", you can use this calculator without any change.
What CGPA gives First Class at Mumbai University?
Generally, a percentage of 60% and above is considered First Class. Using the conversion formula (7.1 × CGPA + 11), a CGPA of approximately 6.90 or higher results in a percentage above 60%.
Approximate thresholds: First Class with Distinction ≈ 75%+ (CGPA ≈ 9.0+), First Class ≈ 60%+ (CGPA ≈ 6.9+), Higher Second Class ≈ 55%+ (CGPA ≈ 6.2+), Second Class ≈ 50%+ (CGPA ≈ 5.5+).
How is CGPA calculated from SGPI at Mumbai University?
CGPA at University of Mumbai is the credit-weighted average of all semester SGPIs:
CGPA = Σ(SGPI × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits)
Each semester's SGPI is multiplied by its total credits, summed across all semesters, and divided by the total credits earned across the entire degree. Use the CGPA Calculator above to do this automatically.
What happens to my CGPA if I fail a subject (KT)?
At Mumbai University, a failed subject is colloquially called a "KT" (from "Keep Term" / ATKT — Allowed To Keep Term). The failed subject's credits remain in the CGPA denominator but contribute 0 grade points until you clear it.
This drags down your SGPI/CGPA. Once you clear the KT in a subsequent attempt, the new grade replaces the 0 and your CGPA is recomputed. Clearing KTs promptly helps stabilise your CGPI.
Is University of Mumbai the same as Bombay University?
Yes. The University of Mumbai was formerly known as the University of Bombay. It was renamed in 1996 when the city of Bombay was renamed Mumbai.
Established in 1857, it is one of the oldest and largest universities in India, with over 800 affiliated colleges. The grading system and conversion formula are the same regardless of the name on your certificate.
