🎓 SPPU Award of Division
CGPA thresholds for the final degree classification
| CGPA Range | Approx. Percentage | Division |
|---|---|---|
| CGPA ≥ 7.42 | ≥ 66% | First Class with Distinction |
| 6.75 ≤ CGPA < 7.42 | 60% – 65.86% | First Class |
| 6.18 ≤ CGPA < 6.75 | 55% – 59.98% | Higher Second Class |
| 5.62 ≤ CGPA < 6.18 | 50% – 54.91% | Second Class / Pass |
| CGPA < 5.62 | < 50% | Not standard pass classification |
📊 Piecewise CGPA-to-Percentage Formulas (Circular 332/2020)
The percentage formula depends on which CGPA band you fall into — this is what the calculator auto-detects.
| Grade Band | CGPA Range | Percentage Formula |
|---|---|---|
| O | 9.00 – 10.00 | 20 × CGPA − 100 |
| A+ | 8.25 – 8.99 | 20 × CGPA − 100 |
| A | 6.75 – 8.24 | 10 × CGPA − 15 |
| B+ | 5.75 – 6.74 | 5 × CGPA + 22.5 |
| B | 5.25 – 5.74 | 5 × CGPA + 22.5 |
| C | 4.25 – 5.24 | 4 × CGPA + 28 |
| P | 4.00 – 4.24 | 20 × CGPA − 40 |
Note: The simplified approximation Percentage = CGPA × 8.9 is commonly used as a quick estimate but can differ from the official piecewise result by ±2-3%. For official transcripts, use the piecewise formula.
SPPU Percentage Formula Examples
O grade (CGPA 9.0+)
Formula: 20 × CGPA − 100
If CGPA = 9.5:
20 × 9.5 − 100 = 90.0%
A grade (CGPA 6.75–8.24)
Formula: 10 × CGPA − 15
If CGPA = 7.85:
10 × 7.85 − 15 = 63.5%
B+ grade (CGPA 5.75–6.74)
Formula: 5 × CGPA + 22.5
If CGPA = 6.53:
5 × 6.53 + 22.5 = 55.15%
C grade (CGPA 4.25–5.24)
Formula: 4 × CGPA + 28
If CGPA = 4.89:
4 × 4.89 + 28 = 47.56%
SPPU CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the SPPU grading scale?
SPPU (Savitribai Phule Pune University) uses a 10-point CBCS grading scale:
O = 10 (Outstanding, ≥ 80%) · A+ = 9 (Excellent, 70-79%) · A = 8 (Very Good, 60-69%) · B+ = 7 (Good, 55-59%) · B = 6 (Above Average, 50-54%) · C = 5 (Average, 45-49%) · P = 4 (Pass, 40-44%) · F = 0 (Fail, < 40%) · Ab = 0 (Absent).
Minimum grade to pass any course is P.
How is SPPU CGPA converted to percentage?
Per SPPU Circular No. 332/2020, the conversion uses a piecewise formula based on the CGPA range:
- CGPA 9.00 – 10.00 (O grade):
20 × CGPA − 100 - CGPA 8.25 – 8.99 (A+ grade):
20 × CGPA − 100 - CGPA 6.75 – 8.24 (A grade):
10 × CGPA − 15 - CGPA 5.75 – 6.74 (B+ grade):
5 × CGPA + 22.5 - CGPA 5.25 – 5.74 (B grade):
5 × CGPA + 22.5 - CGPA 4.25 – 5.24 (C grade):
4 × CGPA + 28 - CGPA 4.00 – 4.24 (P grade):
20 × CGPA − 40
A simpler approximation is Percentage = CGPA × 8.9.
What is the SPPU Award of Division?
Per SPPU regulations:
- First Class with Distinction: CGPA ≥ 7.42 (≥ 66%)
- First Class: 6.75 ≤ CGPA < 7.42 (60% - 65.86%)
- Higher Second Class: 6.18 ≤ CGPA < 6.75 (55% - 59.98%)
- Second Class / Pass: 5.62 ≤ CGPA < 6.18 (50% - 54.91%)
Does SPPU follow CBCS for B.E. and MBA?
Yes. Savitribai Phule Pune University follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for B.E., B.Tech, MBA, MCA, M.Tech, and most other UG/PG programmes.
The same 10-point grading scale and piecewise percentage-conversion formula apply across these programmes.
What's the difference between the official and simplified formulas?
The official formula (Circular 332/2020) uses 7 different piecewise equations based on CGPA bands — most accurate for transcripts.
The simplified approximation (Percentage = CGPA × 8.9) is widely cited as a quick estimate but can differ from the official result by ±2-3% in some bands.
For official documents (job applications, higher studies), always use the piecewise formula. For quick mental math, the × 8.9 multiplier is convenient.
Is SPPU the same as the University of Pune?
Yes. SPPU (Savitribai Phule Pune University) was formerly known as the University of Pune. The university was renamed in 2014 in honour of Savitribai Phule, India's first female teacher and a pioneering social reformer.
The grading system, formulas and regulations remain consistent. If your degree says "University of Pune", you can use this calculator without any change.
Can I calculate my CGPA mid-programme?
Yes. You can compute a running CGPA using only the semesters you've completed so far. Just add the SGPA and total credits for each finished semester. The result reflects your cumulative performance up to that point.
