Lucknow University CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions
What grading system does University of Lucknow use?
LU uses a 10-point absolute grading system under CBCS. There are two grading tables depending on the programme:
Table A (Professional PG / B.Tech): A+ · A · B+ · B · C · D · F. Minimum pass grade is D (marks ≥ 40%).
Table B (MA, MSc, MCom etc.): A+ · A · B+ · B · C · D · P · F. Minimum pass grade is P (marks ≥ 33%).
Both tables use the same top grades — the only difference is the lower end of the scale.
How is Lucknow University CGPA converted to percentage?
As per Section 12 of the LU PG Ordinance 2020: "There is no direct method of conversion of CGPA to percentage marks."
However, CGPA × 10 gives an overall indicative percentage for comparison with the conventional marks system.
Examples: CGPA 7.5 → 75% · CGPA 8.0 → 80% · CGPA 9.0 → 90% (all indicative).
What class/division is awarded at University of Lucknow?
Per LU PG Ordinance 2020, Section 11.2:
First Class with Distinction: CGPA 7.50 – 10.00 | First Class: CGPA 6.00 – 7.49 | Second Class: CGPA 4.50 – 5.99 | Pass Class: CGPA 3.60 – 4.49.
What is the minimum CGPA for a PG degree at Lucknow University?
Two different minimums apply:
Professional PG (MBA, MCA, LLM, MEd, MPEd, MLibISc etc.) → minimum CGPA 5.00.
Arts/Science PG (MA, MSc, MCom, MJMC, MSW etc.) → minimum CGPA 3.60.
Students must also earn the full 96 credits without any F or Ab grade.
Does CGPA × 10 give an exact percentage at LU?
No. The university explicitly states in its ordinance that CGPA × 10 is only an indicative figure. For an official percentage certificate (needed for government jobs, competitive exams, etc.) students must apply to the University's examination section.
Can I calculate my CGPA before all semesters are complete?
Yes. You can compute a running CGPA based on semesters completed so far. Just enter the SGPA and total credits for each finished semester — the calculator will give your current CGPA and indicative percentage.
How are F / backlog subjects counted in CGPA?
An F grade carries numeric grade point 0. The subject's credits are still counted in the denominator, lowering SGPA/CGPA. When you clear the backlog, the better of the two grades is used for computing SGPA and CGPA, as per LU ordinances.
Does this calculator work for LU NEP 2020 UG programmes?
Yes. The same 10-point grading scale and CGPA × 10 indicative formula applies under both the CBCS (PG Ordinance 2020) and the NEP 2020 UG framework at University of Lucknow.
