Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about UoH grading, CGPA, SGPA and percentage conversion.
What is the University of Hyderabad grading scale?
UoH uses 7 letter grades on a 10-point scale, as per the official Teaching & Evaluation Regulations:
- A+ = 10 — Highest grade
- A = 9
- B+ = 8
- B = 7
- C = 6
- D = 5 — Minimum pass grade
- F = 0 — Fail
There is no 'O' grade at UoH. A+ (Grade Point 10) is the highest grade awarded.
How is UoH CGPA converted to percentage?
The official UoH formula (as per UGC 2012 notification mandated for all Central Universities including HCU) is:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
For example, a CGPA of 8.4 converts to 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%.
For official employment or further studies documents, obtain a conversion certificate directly from the UoH Controller of Examinations, as they issue it with the official stamp.
What is the minimum CGPA required to pass at UoH?
There are two levels of minimum requirement:
- Course level: Minimum grade D (Grade Point 5) in every individual course. Students scoring F must appear in a supplementary examination.
- Programme level — PG, Adv. PG, PG Diploma, MCA, MBA, Integrated PG: Minimum overall CGPA of 5.0, with no F grades on record.
- Programme level — M.Phil and M.Tech: Minimum overall CGPA of 5.5, with no F grades on record.
What are the division classifications at UoH?
For PG, Adv. PG, PG Diploma, MCA, MBA, MPA, MFA and Integrated PG programmes:
- CGPA 8.0–10.0: First Division with Distinction
- CGPA 6.5–7.9: First Division
- CGPA 5.5–6.4: Second Division
- CGPA 5.0–5.4: Third Division
For M.Phil and M.Tech: Only First Division with Distinction and First Division — no Third Division. Minimum required CGPA is 5.5.
Why does UoH use A+ as the highest grade and not O?
University of Hyderabad has its own academic regulations that predate the UGC's newer CBCS framework, which introduced the 'O' grade at many universities. UoH's 7-grade system (A+, A, B+, B, C, D, F) is its official and long-standing grading scale.
This is an important distinction for students — if you use a generic CBCS calculator that assumes O = 10, your results will be incorrect. At UoH, A+ = 10 is the top grade.
What happens if I get an F grade at UoH?
An F grade (0 grade points) means you have failed the course. The consequences are:
- Students below D grade may appear in a supplementary examination held within a week after the commencement of the next semester. This is allowed only once.
- If you fail the supplementary exam as well, you must repeat the course (or take an equivalent course with Head and Dean approval) in a subsequent semester.
- F grades are carried in the CGPA calculation with 0 grade points until the course is cleared — which significantly pulls down your overall CGPA.
- No student with F grades on record is eligible for award of the degree.
