The Math

JNTUK CGPA Formula

Per the official R20 / R19 / R16 academic regulations published by JNTUK.

JNTUK CGPA Formula
\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{\displaystyle\sum_{j=1}^{m} C_j \times G_j}{\displaystyle\sum_{j=1}^{m} C_j} \]
CjCredits earned in the j-th course
GjGrade point earned in the j-th course
mTotal subjects from Semester 1 to 8

📝 Worked Example

A B.Tech (R20) student has completed all 8 semesters. Their semester-wise SGPA and credits are:

SemesterSGPACreditsSGPA × Credits
1st8.2208.2 × 20 = 164.0
2nd7.6227.6 × 22 = 167.2
3rd8.8218.8 × 21 = 184.8
4th7.1227.1 × 22 = 156.2
5th9.0209.0 × 20 = 180.0
6th7.4187.4 × 18 = 133.2
7th8.5198.5 × 19 = 161.5
8th8.9188.9 × 18 = 160.2
Total1601,307.1

Plugging into the formula:

\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{1307.1}{160} \approx \mathbf{8.17} \]

And the percentage equivalent (using JNTUK's R20 formula) is:

\[ \text{Percentage} = (8.17 - 0.75) \times 10 = \mathbf{74.2\%} \]
Tool 2

JNTUK SGPA Calculator

Select your regulation, add each subject with its grade and credits to compute your semester GPA.

Add Your Subjects

Select regulation first — R20/R16 and R19 use different grade labels.

How to use the SGPA Calculator

  1. Enter the course or subject name (for example, Mathematics).
  2. Select the grade you received from the dropdown.
  3. Enter the credits assigned to that course.
  4. Click “Add Subject” to add it to the table.
  5. Repeat for every subject, then click “Calculate SGPA”.

JNTUK SGPA Formula

JNTUK SGPA

Got Questions?

JNTUK CGPA — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the JNTUK grading scale for R20 / R16?

Under R20 and R16 regulations, JNTUK uses a 10-point grading system:

O = 10 (Outstanding) · S = 9 (Excellent) · A = 8 (Very Good) · B = 7 (Good) · C = 6 (Above Average) · D = 5 (Average/Pass) · F = 0 (Fail).

What is the JNTUK grading scale for R19?

Under R19 regulations, JNTUK uses a different set of grade labels:

A+ = 10 · A = 9 · B = 8 · C = 7 · D = 6 · E = 5 (Pass) · F = 0 (Fail).

Note: An "A" in R19 equals 9 points, while an "A" in R20 equals 8 points. Always confirm your regulation before comparing.

How is JNTUK CGPA converted to percentage?

For R16 regulation and onwards (R16, R19, R20, R23), JNTUK uses:

Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10

Examples: CGPA 8.5 → 77.5%  |  CGPA 7.5 → 67.5%  |  CGPA 9.0 → 82.5%.

Students under older R13 or R10 regulations use: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10.

Using the wrong formula inflates or deflates your percentage by 2.5 points — always verify your regulation from your hall ticket or transcript.

What is the minimum CGPA to pass at JNTUK?

The minimum grade to pass a subject is D (5 grade points) under R20/R16, or E (5 grade points) under R19. A student must register for and secure all 160 credits (across 8 semesters) to be eligible for the B.Tech degree award.

Can I calculate my CGPA before completing all 8 semesters?

Yes. You can compute a running CGPA based on the semesters you've completed so far. Just enter the SGPA and total credits for each finished semester and click Calculate CGPA.

How are JNTUK backlogs counted in CGPA?

An F (Fail) grade carries a grade point of 0, but the credits of that subject are still counted in the denominator of the CGPA formula. Once you clear the backlog, the passing grade replaces the F and CGPA is recomputed accordingly.

Where can I download my official JNTUK CGPA certificate?

Download your official JNTUK CGPA / percentage conversion certificate from jntuksdc.co.in using your hall ticket number. This certificate is required for placements, higher studies, and government job applications.

What is the difference between JNTUK and JNTUH CGPA calculation?

The CGPA and SGPA formulas are identical across JNTUK (Kakinada) and JNTUH (Hyderabad). The key difference is in the percentage conversion formula: JNTUK (R16 onwards) uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, whereas JNTUH uses (CGPA − 0.5) × 10. Never use JNTUH's formula on a JNTUK transcript — it will inflate your percentage by 2.5 points.
